Wine Country of Napa & Sonoma

California wine is known and loved throughout the world, and in addition to being a top wine producing region California’s Wine Country is now a top tourist destination too.

Viticulture has been successful in California since its first beginnings in the mid-19th century due to the favorable climate and fertile soils. There are now over 400 wineries in the area north of San Francisco, many of which are located in two of the region’s top producing valleys, the Sonoma Valley, and the Napa Valley.

The Sonoma Valley was actually the birthplace of the California wine industry and attracts many thousands of visitors who come here to find out just how wine is produced, and of course to sample the numerous different wines too. In both the Sonoma and Napa Valley you’ll find high class restaurants and wonderful cuisine, and with the focus on alcohol and top restaurants, this part of the road trip is best left to adults only as children are not encouraged to visit these places.

Beautiful foods and wines are not the only attractions in California’s Wine Country. While you’re here, why not take the time to visit some of the area’s other places of interest – the beautiful Quarryhill Botanic Garden, the Sonoma State Historic Park, the historic Mission San Francisco Solano, and the infamous Bull Wing Inn with its long list of notable guests?!

Quick Facts:
--- The Napa Valley attracts 4.7 million visitors per year making this the second most visited tourist destination in California, after Disneyland!
--- Sonoma is home to the Sonoma Valley Film Festival, held each year (usually in April).
