Roswell, New Mexico

For a change from the culture and history of New Mexico, a visit to Roswell should be a must for any family road trip vacation, offering an ‘out of this world’ experience!

You don’t have to be a sci-fi fan to have heard of Roswell, though this probably helps to increase the excitement of visiting this city in New Mexico! Since 1947 Roswell has been the center of attention for conspiracy theorists and UFO buffs, after a supposed UFO crashed nearby. Pieces of what was said to be a UFO were photographed, though the government later claimed this was simply a weather balloon. Many visitors to Roswell have their own opinions and if you’re here in early July you’ll run into many people who believe it was true at the UFO Festival.

The International UFO Museum and Research Center is dedicated to the local cult activity, but if this really isn’t your thing perhaps the city’s Roswell Museum and Art Center would be a better visit. It has a wing that’s devoted to space flight and rocket science though you won’t find any reference to little green men here!

Once you’ve had the chance to make up your own mind as to whether there really was a UFO crash in Roswell you might want to head out of the city to the Bottomless Lakes State Park, 12 miles east. This beautiful area has opportunities for enjoying the water, whether swimming or boating, and has camping for both tents and RVs.

Quick Facts:
--- Despite being known as the Roswell UFO Incident, the supposed crash site was actually 75 miles away, closer to the town of Corona.
--- Roswell has been the subject of many books, movies and TV programs over the past few decades as interest has been re-sparked by shows like ‘The X-Files’.
