Palm Springs

It’s funny how a city in the middle of the desert can become so popular, but Palm Springs is just that! The year round warm climate makes this resort city an outdoor enthusiasts dream with countless opportunities for playing golf or tennis, and for hiking in the surrounding desert and mountains. There are also the plentiful spas to try out for a welcome and relaxing break from any road trip!

Palm Springs really grew in the 1950’s and 1960’s when it became a popular spot for celebrities from nearby Los Angeles. It’s not so popular for this now but the city has retained a high class image with smart 5 star hotels and restaurants, high-end boutiques, and a casino.

As a stop on a family vacation Palm Springs has some great attractions, some of which offer something a little different to the norm. There’s the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for example. This is the world’s largest rotating tramway and transports you up to the San Jacinto Peak for fabulous views; on a clear day you can see for over 200 miles! Once up the top you can enjoy nature trails too, or do some backcountry hiking (permissible with a permit).

Back down at a lower level more family hiking can be enjoyed at the Indian Canyons, sacred Native American sites that are now open to the public.

Quick Facts:
--- Palm Springs got its name when the land here was first surveyed. A mineral spring was found at the base of some palm trees, hence the name Palm Springs!
---Palm Springs has a fabulous climate, experiencing 354 days of sunshine per year.
