Las Vegas

Whether or not the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas appeals to you, this city in the Nevada desert is a good stopping off point on a road trip as it’s relatively close to attractions like Death Valley and the Grand Canyon. And yes, it really is as flashy as it looks in the pictures!

You don’t have to be into gambling to appreciate a visit to Las Vegas, and despite the adult image there’s actually a lot for families with children to enjoy here too. The crazy architecture turns a walk down ‘The Strip’ (aka Las Vegas Boulevard) into a travel brochure as you venture between Italy’s Venice, New York, Paris, and Luxor. Ride the roller coaster at New York New York; venture to the top of the identical, though scaled down version of the Eiffel Tower; ride a gondola on the waters of Venice; or watch the lions in the MGM Grand’s Lion Habitat. You can do all this and more, and only in Las Vegas!

Once you’ve got over the fact that Vegas is full of the unimaginable there are several things you really should see and do here – the Fountains of Bellagio are world famous and one of the Strip’s top attractions, not to be missed! While the view from the Eiffel Tower is good the best view is from Stratosphere, the 1,149 feet (350m) high tower. From the observation deck at the top of this tower you can see the whole of the Strip, the rest of city, and for miles out into the surrounding, barren desert. Finally, it has to be done – a photo by the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign in the middle of Las Vegas Boulevard; best taken at night when you get the lights of the Strip behind you!

Quick Facts:

--- The first hotel in Las Vegas was the Golden Gate, built in downtown Vegas in 1906 and extended when gambling was legalized in Nevada in 1931. You can still see the Golden Gate here today within the newly developed downtown area called the Fremont Experience.

--- The Mirage was the first mega resort to be built on the Strip in 1989, paving the way for all these other spectacular hotels and casinos that Las Vegas is now so famous for.
