Indian Pueblos

New Mexico’s Pueblos are one of the state’s top attractions, giving visitors a glimpse into ancient cultures and traditions. They are scattered across the northwest, north central and central parts of the state.

In all, New Mexico has 19 pueblos, though be aware that not all of these will be welcome to visitors. Some are more famous than others, such as the Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico. If you’re planning a road trip to see the more impressive pueblos then Taos Pueblo should definitely make your itinerary. This is on the US National Register of Historic Places, and on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

If your family vacation is starting and ending in Albuquerque then you may want to try to concentrate on those pueblos closest to the city, or at least within the central New Mexico region. This region has eight pueblos, two of which are closed except during feast days, but Conchita Pueblo, Santo Domingo, San Felipe, Zia, Sandia and Isleta Pueblos are all open to the public with some restrictions.  A great place to start is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque.

Photography and sketching are often prohibited so make sure you check the rules at each pueblo before charging in with your camera! The residents of the pueblos are, after all, trying to limit exposure to outside technologies and influences in order to keep them as authentic as possible. So remember that these aren’t museums, they are living communities and their wishes must be respected.

After taking note of all the rules you’ll find that each pueblo will offer something slightly different. These are excellent places to buy quality pottery, jewelry, and other handcrafts and arts, and if you buy directly from the pueblo you can usually be sure of exactly where your money is going!

Quick Facts:
--- The Zia Pueblo itself doesn’t have too much to offer for tourists, but their presence is known throughout New Mexico as it’s the Zia Sun Symbol that appears on the New Mexico state flag.
--- Several of New Mexico’s pueblos have taken advantage of a recent change in law and opened up casinos in order to help attract visitors and bring in money for the community.
