Flathead Lake

Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Montana, and it has a wonderfully mild climate that's just right for your next vacation.

With spectacular mountains on two sides of the lake, the scenery is breathtaking and offers the outdoor enthusiast with many places to go boating or hiking. Take a road trip around the lake, and you'll find peaceful views of fruit orchards and vineyards. There is something to see for the whole family.

Head out onto the crystal clear waters to fish for trout, perch or whitefish. Keep your camera at the ready, just in case you catch a glimpse of the legendary Flathead Lake Monster. There are several islands to explore too. The largest island in the lake is Wild Horse Island, where a local Native American tribe used to pasture their horses. Today, it's a protected state park filled with wildlife including a few wild horses.

Head to the north-east about 30 miles from the lake, and you'll come to the Glacier National Park. You'll find more hiking and views of the local glaciers. Don't miss your chance to see the retreating glaciers before they disappear entirely.

Also nearby, is the famous Yellowstone National Park. Take a drive to the park for more wilderness exploration, horseback rides or even some fly-fishing.
