Estes Park

Don't let the name fool you! Estes Park isn't one of the many national parks in Colorado, it's actually a town, but it is a place you might want to stop on your way to Rocky Mountain National Park. The town is a handy place for you to set up your vacation "base camp", near the eastern entrance to the park.

As a town catering to tourists, you'll find anything and everything you'll need for your trips into the park. Restaurants, souvenir shops, yummy ice cream parlors, and other helpful services like laundromats.

The population of the town triples over the summer, so be prepared for some crowds, especially in August. Frankly, it's worth it for a chance to spend time at the Rocky Mountain National Park, and that's why most people come to Estes Park.

The park has not only mountain views, but an abundance of wildlife too. Elk, deer, moose and Bighorn sheep are all fairly common sights if you keep your eyes open. And don't forget to watch the skies too, for eagles and soaring hawks. Once you're up past the treeline, you’re bound to hear the chirps of a marmot or two!

Estes Park is the starting point for the Trail Ridge Road, the highest highway in the country. After you've spent some time hiking around the park, be sure you take this drive out of the town, and don't miss the scenic turnoffs; you'll get some amazing photos, no matter where you stop. Be aware that this route has some pretty steep turns, so take is easy (especially when driving an RV).

Quick Facts:

-- Outside of town is the Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write his novel, "The Shining".
