Arizona

Yes, it's the home of Grand Canyon National Park, which does kind of overshadow any other attractions that Arizona might have. But don't be so awestruck by the Grand Canyon that you forget to see what else the state has to offer when you're on vacation here!

After you've hiked the Grand Canyon rim trails, or even hiked down the base of the canyon, be prepared for many other adventures in Arizona. Another great canyon spot is the Canyon de Chelly National Monument that has cliff dwellings like the Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado.

For some different terrain, try the Saguaro National Park, home of the mighty saguaro cactus. The park is a classic American desert landscape, and is a beautiful place to hike if you don't mind the heat. There is a scenic drive you can take for an easier tour of the park.

Not up for any desert hikes? Cool down at Lake Powell where you can go swimming, fishing or boating, particularly to visit the impressive Rainbow Bridge. There are some great canyon hiking trails around the lake too, since it's a man-made lake in Glen Canyon. There is a driving route around the lake,  including one track that is for 4x4s only.

For something a little more pop culture, hit the road on Route 66, one of the most famous stretches of highway in the country. It's not officially "Route 66" anymore but there are historic maps that trace the original path of the highway. You can follow the route through the city of Flagstaff, and go by such sights as the Petrified Forest National Park and a number of old ghost towns. It's the classic American road trip!

One old town that has definitely not given up the ghost, is Tombstone. Nothing says "Wild West" like a gunfight at the O.K Corral, even when it’s just costumed actors with fake guns! You can see much of the town just as it was in the 1800s, including the old Boot Hill cemetery.
