New Mexico’s only national park is Carlsbad Caverns. Though the park has its share of hiking trails and backcountry areas it’s best known for featuring some of the world’s most spectacular caves.
Situated about 18 miles southwest of Carlsbad (the small town which gave the caverns their name) Carlsbad Caverns National Park does not have any campgrounds or other accommodations in the park, so if you’re planning to stay in the area, Carlsbad itself is probably your best bet. Despite the opportunities for hiking and bird watching, many visitors come to the park for a few hours only, then rush off on to their next family vacation destination. But to get a true sense for the absolutely amazing caverns here you really should plan on spending a little more time.
First, the main tourist attraction… Within the Big Cave is the aptly named Big Room, and this is the main attraction at Carlsbad. This huge cavern is the second largest cave chamber in the world measuring almost 4,000 feet (1,219m) long,
625 feet (190.5m) wide, and 350 feet (107m) high. It really is huge! The Big Cave can be accessed via the elevator from the visitor center, and although this is a rapid, ear-popping ride, the short hike in through the natural entrance to the cave is a far more special way of entering. Before you head on down, pop into the visitor center and rent an audio headset as this is a great way to find out more about the geology and history of the caves.
If you don’t mind getting dirty and want to see parts of the caves that most visitors don’t get to see, join one of the ranger-led tours. These tours take you into parts of the caves that haven’t been developed and are very exciting, though not for the claustrophobic! These tours get booked up so just ask us to reserve your place in advance.
Quick Facts:
