Drive Trail Ridge Road up to 12,183 feet, the highest continuous highway in the United States. Wildlife sightings include elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep, black bears and coyotes. Wildflowers dot the meadows and hillsides in the summer months. Try kayaking on your own or saddle up for a horseback ride with one of the park outfitters. Nearby Estes Park has good restaurants, July 4th fireworks and a late July Rodeo.

For those seeking the peacefulness and solitude of the desert, take a few days to explore some of Southern California's best spots. Leave Los Angeles and head into Joshua Tree National Park. Take a rock climbing class if you want, or simply explore the area on your own by foot or mountain bike. Then head into the remote and rugged Mojave Desert to play in sand dunes and caves. Spend a night in Palm Springs, soaking in the spas, before returning to Los Angeles.

The wildlife watching is diverse, with good chances of seeing bears, elk, bison, deer, mountain goats and big horn sheep, along with eagles and other birds of prey. Return to Billings via the incredible Beartooth Highway Scenic Drive.
