Albuquerque

New Mexico’s largest city is centrally located within the state, making this a great place to start and end a family vacation filled with cultural treats!

Although a good setting off point for a road trip across New Mexico, the sights and sounds of Albuquerque itself should be enjoyed with a stay here of a couple of days, as the city has plenty to offer. Albuquerque Old Town is always a popular attraction that’s concentrated around the area where the city was first founded in 1706, and Old Town Plaza is very much at the heart of this historic district. The wonderful architecture, great restaurants and craft shops make this a lively part of Albuquerque. Be sure to shop for some authentic Pueblo crafts here.

You should also take time to visit some of the city’s excellent museums before heading out in your car or RV as these will give you a great insight into the many things you’ll see on your New Mexico road trip. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and the National Hispanic Cultural Center both offer small museums and cultural artifacts, as does the larger Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. The latter also offers informative guided walking tours of the Old Town.

Rising above Albuquerque you’ll see the Sandia Mountains which can be reached on the Sandia Peak Tramway. The tramway takes you up to the peaks where you can enjoy miles upon miles of hiking or simply admire the lofty views over the city and surrounding region. Another way to get up in the mountains is with a half day Albuquerque Mountain Jeep Tour that we’d be happy to arrange for you, or perhaps the three hour Desert Jeep Tour would be more your thing?!

Quick Facts:
--- In early October the skies above Albuquerque are filled with hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes as part of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, said to be the most photographed event in the world!
--- The Sandia Peak Tramway is the longest passenger aerial tramway in the world.
